In one respect I get the “academic neutral” voice approach, but it's not how humans communicate, so it's always felt a bit alien to me. Thanks for digging into this topic!
Of course you can. But look at what you said: given the right prompting and examples. The academic neutral voice doesn't require any special prompting or examples--it is the same as AI.
AI can absolutely imitate this style given the right prompting and examples, and it can even insert miriad errors to make it seem authentic and less obsequies.

As one of those research colleagues. I disagree a bit on this. My research load is 40% of my total workload, which means at least one peer-reviewed article or external grants per year just to meet expectations. I publish using AI for public audiences, academic audiences, and industry-specific audiences. I think what you mean by academic neutral tone with an AI is actually more of a simplistic tone. A good editor at any academic press will be able to tell the difference between simplistic AI tone and an actual academic tone, which draws upon the many years of research and scholarship that are already part of a researcher’s voice. Like the previous comment, I believe that it’s not an either or conversation, but a more nuanced one that is based on the iterative nature of the writing process as it is conducted through prompting. you certainly present an interesting perspective that is valid within your institutional context. TBH, I enjoy writing in an academic tone, which I think can be engaging😎
obsequies. Ha!

It's totally alien! Agreed!

“It’s that in-between style that we love to read, but AI can’t really do very well. (At least not yet.)”

Actually, several studies have been done on this, and no they can't tell the diffrence. They think they can, and that, in itself, is dangerous.
